Kaori was one of the first members I noticed in Koi no Dance Site PV, the first Morning Musume PV I had and watched over and over again. I just thought she was very pretty. However, almost immediately she faded into the background for me and never really became a favourite.
I need to give Kaori props for a few things. First of all, she used to be absolutely hilarious when Momusu visited Utaban and other shows. This was before she became the leader. She was just wild and all over the place, funny in a clumsy way. I guess becoming a leader forced her to calm down, which is a shame. She still had some funny moments in Hello Morning, for example, but much less often.
Another thing that made her funny was her dancing. She must be the clumsiest dancer in Momusu history, which is actually good because being very bad at something is another way of being entertaining. Some of the greatest moments on Hello Morning were when Iida was supposed to show off her dancing skills in some game. I couldn't stop laughing... Kaori had a lot of comic value that way.
A lot of fans might say that Kaori has been one of the best singers in Morning Musume. Personally, I have to say I've never been a huge fan of her voice. I can't really say there's something wrong with it, it's just not the kind of voice I like. Maybe it's her way of singing that bothers me. Either way, I think she was a stable singer and a valuable addition to Momusu vocally. It's just that her voice was never really my cup of tea, and this is why I haven't paid attention to her solo material.
Right now Kaori is pregnant and about to get married. She will be leaving H!P after the concert tour that takes place next month. I doubt I'll miss her a lot because she's someone I didn't pay a lot of attention to, but I am very happy for her and I wish her all the best. I think Kaori was also one of the members who aren't my top favourites as idols, but would be interesting to know personally.
Ai Kago and Nozomi Tsuji
This is going to be hard for me because I don't want to be rude, but I don't have a lot of good things to say about these two. It's not necessarily related to their recent scandals, either.
Aibon just used to be the cutest kid ever, didn't she? She is actually the reason Morning Musume first caught my interest. I saw the "I WISH" cover and Aibon stood out to me instantly. She's the reason I started looking for more information about Momusu. Too bad that feeling of love for Aibon didn't last very long (I guess because by the time I got into Momusu, Aibon wasn't that cute little kid anymore).
As for the whole "twin" thing - it never really interested me, even if I can see how beneficial it was to Momusu, Minimoni and W as a marketing trick to show these two as twin-like friends with silly antics. I did find them funny at times, but to me their goofing around wasn't anything ground-breaking or the reason I'd tune in to watch Momusu.
I guess the biggest reason why I didn't buy into the whole twin thing was that, for some unexplainable reason, I've always found it very hard to like Nono (Nozomi Tsuji). There's just really nothing about her that I find likeable, and I'd rather not go into details about what I don't like about her because it'd be pointless. Who cares, really? I'm not a 'hater' who wishes bad things to her least favourite members - I actually wish Tsuji the best with her marriage and pregnancy. I think the moment I liked her the most was when I saw her smiling happily next to her soon-to-be husband, and not because she'd have to leave the business for at least 9 months, but because for once she actually seemed 'real' to me.
Aibon remained kind of neutral to me during the time before her scandal - I found her singing voice quite lovely, especially in Sakuragumi songs. Too bad W didn't have many songs that had more singing, less screeching. Anyway, back to Aibon. By the time her smoking scandal took place, I had already lost a lot of interest in her, so the news didn't really affect me. When it was confirmed that she wouldn't be coming back, it didn't really mean anything to me, either. It's horrible to say these things, but it's the truth. I still think that if she was serious about coming back but still got caught smoking again, and in the company of the kind of guy she was caught with... She must be pretty dumb. Doing the things that will risk your career when you know the tabloids are after you... She should've known better, if she was really considering a comeback. If not, it's not as bad, but at least she could have quit officially months earlier instead of keeping her fans in suspense. In any case the way she handled her time-off lacked consideration towards her agency and her fans.
Strangely enough, right now I think I like Nono more than Aibon. I never thought this day would come.
Aibon and Nono were a part of some great, classic, fun Morning Musume moments, but they weren't really my favourite members and now that they're gone for the most part, I don't really miss them. I guess it's a shame, but I don't really know what else to say.
I haven't actually had a real favourite Morning Musume member in ages. You know, the kind of member you want to see as much as possible and get to know as well as possible. Because I haven't had an instant, huge favourite member in Momusu (Nacchi had just graduated when I got into Hello!Project and all), I've always looked forward to auditions, hoping they'd choose someone I could support from the very beginning. But the girls they chose, Koharu and Aika, weren't going to be my favourites, even if I do like them both.
So, there I was, juggling eggs and wondering about who the mysterious Ponytail-chan was, when ALONG CAME CHINA!!!
I don't find it a problem that her Japanese isn't fluent yet. I think she's very natural talking to camera, a beauty and a girl who just won't stop smiling...
I can't wait to see the next Momusu single with the new members, but especially Linlin. We haven't even heard her sing yet, or seen her dance... I can't say that she's my favourite member because she hasn't done a lot so far, but let's just say she has a lot of potential and I look forward to her future projects.
I've been delaying writing this because the one who's up next is my favourite Hello! Project member, Natsumi Abe.
Ah, I don't even know where to begin...
The thing is, I love Nacchi a lot and she is special to me. But at the same time I'm not one of those fans who live in a fantasy thinking that their favourite idols are perfect/flawless/only release good music, and so on. There are some things I avoid thinking about - such as the possibility that she has a boyfriend - but I'm not completely deluded, you know? Sometimes I feel like I'm actually more critical than casual fans when it comes to her. But I'm able to be critical towards her because I know I'd still love her, anyway. And most of the time I keep the criticisms to myself because uh, it's between me and her. Weird, I guess.
One thing that seems to set me apart from a lot of H!P fans with favourite members is that there are actually times when I get bored of my favourite, Nacchi. Well not really bored, but there are times when I'd rather do something else than watch her videos and such. It's just a part of my nature as a fan; the "importance level" of my fandoms will vary and that applies even to Nacchi. But there is no moment when I don't love her. Even at times when I've thought I'm bored of her I may have bumped into her smile somewhere and found myself smiling back, thinking "ah, only Nacchi has this effect on me".
So what is there to like about Nacchi, anyway? First of all, I'd like to mention her goofy personality. Nacchi is very child-like and silly. She tells bad jokes that nobody can understand and she's adorable because of it. This kind of "dorkiness" is something I find very attractive. But she's also a sweetheart who gets attached to other members; it has been said that Nacchi can tell when someone is feeling down, and will try to make them feel better (unfortunately I've forgotten who said that, but it was someone in Morning Musume). Nacchi is in a way very sensitive because when she feels strong friendship from other members or love from the fans she may start to cry. Even after 10 years of stardom I think she still has that humble girl from Hokkaido inside her.
...Let's move on.
Nacchi is also so beautiful. Her smile is gorgeous and her eyes can be very expressive. She's not someone I'd call especially beautiful the first time I'd see her, but the more I learned about her the more beautiful I started to find her. And the sexiness... Well, Nacchi is just so attractive to me that she's the sexiest member to me in Hello! Project. She could be wearing the ugliest clothes, worst make-up and hairstyle ever, and I'd still be attracted to her. It's just how this fandom is.
I'm afraid to say Nacchi has released a lot of songs I wouldn't listen to more than once if they weren't Nacchi. Composition/arrangement-wise her discography isn't as good to me as it could be, mostly because she releases a lot of ballads and I'm more into upbeat music. But that's ok because I like her voice and that will make up for a lot. Besides, of course there are also songs I genuinely like, even ballads (Sora LIFE GOES ON for example).
Ah, there was a time when it wasn't a lot of fun to be a Nacchi fan: when it turned out she had plagiarized some song lyrics in poems that were published in her essay books and the like. For a few months she disappeared from the face of earth and fans couldn't be sure if she'd ever come back - luckily, she did. Either way, even just because of this incidence it is obvious to me that Nacchi isn't perfect. She makes mistakes, whether by accident or on purpose, it's not important really. In the end it makes her seem more next-door-girl-like to me. It's easier for me to like someone who has more than just a perfect facade.
Well, I feel like I haven't really achieved anything by writing this... Feels like I've been just repeating things I've said many times before! But at least maybe I'll never have to write any of it again because it's all here now. I love Nacchi, she's brilliant, I've had lots of fun times with her, I've laughed with her, I've cried with her, and I treasure all those times. Yeah baby!!
I'm way too lazy to write the kind of entry I had planned at first, so here are just some reasons why I'm into Hello! Project.
- Music
- Personalities
- Looks
- Cuteness
- Misc
- Favourite members
I like H!P's music because in general it's upbeat, catchy pop music sung in Japanese. That's all there is to say, really. I'll leave deeper analysis of the music to people who'd actually know what they're talking about...
Personalities in Hello! Project are important to me. My favourite members are people who aren't afraid to be goofy on camera, aren't afraid to embarrass themselves a bit to bring entertainment to others. My favourites aren't in general the best at telling jokes, but instead the humour (or cuteness) results from how 'bad' the jokes are, how they tell the jokes and how they expect people to find them funny. Their reactions to all kinds of things are also usually exaggerated, which makes them entertaining. This kind of outgoing humorous characteristic is what makes some members likeable to me.
Then I also find those members likeable who appear very empathic, friendly and reliable, or seem to be good teachers to the younger members. Basically members who seem warm-hearted. I like members who show their emotions, whether it's laughing or crying. It's difficult to find honesty in idols who grow in front of cameras and learn to follow certain behavioural patterns in the public eye, but I believe that there are also times when you see an honest reaction from the girls. Sometimes the laughter or tears are real, and so on. At those times, being able to connect with the member is very rewarding.
What I personally find extra respectable in H!P members is if they show interest in the world around them. I'm not expecting them to be super knowledgeable, but if they express wishes like "I'd like to learn to speak Korean" or "I'd like to visit Europe", it makes me feel good. I guess it's because I love learning languages myself and am interested in travelling and different cultures. H!P members don't really mention things like these too often, so when they do, it makes me happy.
What I also appreciate in H!P members is ambition and hard work. Some members obviously work harder than others and when I see someone really aiming high, I like to give them props for that. On the other hand, if I feel someone could do better, I feel disappointed and may like the member a bit less because of it.
So these were all some bits and pieces of personalities that I like in H!P members.
When it comes to looks, there are some members I like because they are cute, some because they are pretty/beautiful, and some because they are cute, pretty and sexy (to me if someone isn't cute, they can't really be sexy, either, because for me to be really attracted to someone they need to be able to soften me with their cuteness as well. My favourite member Natsumi Abe is a great example of this). My top favourite members either have all these three qualities looks-wise or are close to this; an exception is Momoko Tsugunaga who is mostly there thanks to her hyper camwhore personality and her weird, high voice. Momoko is cute, but her looks were never really the reason why I started liking her. Anyway, looks are an important reason why I'm into H!P and I'm not going to deny it. I find the majority of H!P to be cute and/or pretty girls and women.
Whether looks, personality, voice or all of these, cuteness is what H!P is about. Cute Japanese girls singing cute songs. Well, lately the songs haven't been too cute, but the girls still are. It also seems like a lot of cute-voiced girls are making it to Hello! Project instead of girls with a deeper, maturer voice. Anyway, I'll admit I love everything cute and that's a big reason of why I love H!P.
Some misc reasons to love H!P... For someone who is as lifeless as me H!P is a great fandom because it's just so damn big and it's been around for 10 years. There's always something to talk about, whether new, old, or comparing the two. I think this year H!P has also picked up on releasing exciting singles/PBs/DVDs because I've recently felt like there's always something to look forward to. There's no time to get bored, really. Especially if you're very hardcore and try to watch everything. I've given up on that a long time ago, but some still do it and I can understand it.
There's one thing about H!P fandom that just came to my mind: the battle of old VS. new. What I've perceived is that the majority of foreign fans are to a large extent living in the past. The "things were better when...." attitude is everywhere. Everyone's wishing for the old H!P groups/members etc. to come back. I suppose this is where I differ from several fans. I like the way H!P is now, I support all the new groups and members. I like Berryz Kobo, C-ute, H!P Eggs and THE Possible. I like Ayaya better in GAM than solo because she was never enough to interest me by herself. I like it that Momusu's going to have two Chinese members for at least some time. I like it that Yossi's graduating and Momusu will be testing their wings lacking all golden era members. I like the current Morning Musume line-up. What I miss from the past are stable subgroups (but I'd like new groups, not the old Tanpopo or Pucchimoni or whatever), shuffles each year and Sports Festival (which could still take place this year, but who knows, maybe it's in the past now). However, I do still respect the old school members a lot, I do like a lot of things in the past - but I don't think they would work in the current Hello! Project and Tsunku's not stupid, he can see it, too.
What I do find funny is how H!P has become so obviously sexier recently. They had a sexy image at times earlier as well, but... For example, when I became a fan, finding a Nacchi pic with cleavage was like finding a needle in a hay stack. She had only worn bikini for MM's very, very early photo shoots and then for Momusu's Alo-Hello 2003, and those were literally the only times you could see that much of her skin. Now she reveals her beautiful shoulders and cleavage area almost more often than not. I'm not complaining because it's very sexy and she's a sexy young woman. But it is funny how the difference is so obvious. If I had even imagined in 2004 Maki doing what she does in her singles now, I would've probably thought "lol I'm crazy, that will never happen". Ch-ch-ch-changes~~
Ok, I almost started writing about my favourite members, but then I realized I'll still write about many of them on my Momusu Focus entries. So instead I guess I should just finally stop here. Wah, what a horrendous entry.
Well, Kei has never been one of my favourite members in H!P. It's not that I have anything against her, but she just doesn't really interest me a lot. However, even so there are a few things about her that deserve some nice feedback from me.
First of all, even if Kei isn't too interesting to me, she seems very down-to-earth, approachable, warm and friendly, like someone who'd make a good friend. (The problem really is that in my H!P fandom, I'm not looking for a friend, but... something else. Remind me to write about that at some point) I've read about her being a supportive senpai to younger Momusu generations, as well. So what's great about her is that she seems like a genuinely good person.
(I must mention here that during my first year of H!P fandom, there was something I disliked about Kei, too. I got some kind of weird, negative vibes from her. I think it may have been because I got the image she didn't have a really good relationship with Nacchi... But her comments about her were actually quite spot on. If I remember correctly, Kei said that if she was a guy, she'd never date Nacchi because she would charm 'him' and he'd kind of get hooked... I can't really remember it exactly, but I think Nacchi would really do that. Charm you and make you do whatever she wants, heh. It's ok for Kei to find that kind of relationship undesirable, and it was kind of silly of me to read too much into that comment back then... But hey, I was a newbie! The relationship between Kei and Nacchi still fascinates me, though. I think there was some strong rivalry there, at least from Kei's side.)
What's also cool about Kei is that she's always seemed sort of interested in languages (which is something I can relate to) and like an independent, smart young woman. But that's just something I wanted to mention before I forget.
Unlike Asuka, Kei was always a background singer regardless of having a good voice. Because of this most fans probably remember her more from always being the target of jokes during her years in MM, most obviously on Utaban (but also in general). So Kei also deserves props for always being entertaining and a good sport, not afraid to put herself on the line.
I think I've run out of things to say now... But yeah. Kei's a good, 'safe' member.
I wrote earlier about reasons why I'm not as big a fan of Maki as I used to be, so I guess there's no reason to discuss that, anymore.
When I initially got into H!P, I wasn't really a perv. I didn't care about girls in bikinis or the like. But then I saw Maki Goto's photobook "Prism" and I haven't been the same since. So I guess Maki's hotness is what made me interested in her at the beginning. Thanks to her I ended up watching my first Japanese drama series, Yanpapa, and perhaps more notably her movie RPG. I was really surprised at the role she had in the movie, since it was quite the opposite of being an innocent, happy joy-joy girl. Her acting was pretty good, too, since the ending was painful to watch (I don't want to spoil the movie so I won't go into details). Pretty quickly I learned to know the hot, talented, and cute sides of Maki Goto.
For a long time Gocchin was my second favourite member, but the weird thing is, her singing voice was still never too special to me (I think I actually liked her talking more, it could even make me feel all fuzzy and warm inside). I recognize her talent, not to mention I respect her tons for improving from the somewhat weak-voiced girl into the great performer she is today (well, compared to most of H!P)... But the tone of her voice was never one of my favourites, and sadly, it's one of those things you can't help. Also, I always found it somewhat weird that many of my favourite Gocchin songs were c/ws. I suppose that's because c/ws may be more 'experimental' than the actual single tracks.
Anyway, let's talk about Gocchin. I already mentioned that she's pretty strong vocally. I think she also has quite a fascinating character. She has always seemed mature, yet she can also seem so child-like whenever she's goofing around backstage, etc. At least in the past to me she has been a combination of innocence and maturity. Also, she may seem like a dull personality at first sight, but when you look deeper (or find subbed vids...) you realize she can say quite funny and/or weird things, or be funny 'by accident' - I guess a memorable example of this is the Futarigoto episode where she watches a horror movie and falls off her seat screaming. In addition, she might seem like a diva at first sight, but when you find out the reality about how she treats her fans, how much she gets attached to others, how much she cries when she has to say goodbye... It becomes obvious this girl isn't really self-centered at all.
Now, I wrote this way because I think Maki Goto is one of the H!P members who is very easy to misinterpret unless you bother to find out what this girl is all about. Because of her look and often mature behaviour it's easy to think she's a diva who has little sense of humour, but that really isn't the case.
Speaking of look, Gocchin, if anyone, has unique features (for a Japanese pop idol, at least). The thing is, she has huge ears, huge eyes, a huge nose, and her lips are full, as well. But somehow it just all works together. She's the most gorgeous monkey girl I've ever seen. However, because of these 'huge' features, if she loses a lot of weight it will make the huge features stand out even more, turning them from a strength into a weakness. That's why I'm glad she's currently not as skinny as she was at her worst stage, but sometimes I do worry, you know. Either way, it's no wonder Maki stood out to all of Japan in Love Machine.
I haven't been paying close attention to her career recently, but from what I've heard her latest single(s) sold better than some previous ones, which makes me happy. It's so rare for H!P acts to actually increase their sales that good news make a fan extra glad.
Well, I wasted a nice amount of time there, and greatly managed to avoid writing about negative things. Hooray!
Omg! I have time to write here!
I've kept writing her name "Yuko" until now, but I guess it's never too late to change...
Yuuchan was actually my first true favourite H!P member. After getting into Morning Musume I started watching Hello! Morning like all good converts do (this was when the news segment was hosted by Asami Konno, Yuuchan and Makoto Ogawa). And what can I say, there was something about her. I just fell head over heels for Yuuchan. She seemed so mature compared to the other girls (duh) and I loved her soft, sexy talking voice. So what if she likes to yell sometimes... It didn't take long until I fell in love with her singing as well, even if her songs aren't really the kind I usually listen to. I'd listen to those songs just to hear her voice. Oh what it's like to be in love.
For a few weeks I was high on Yuuchan, saving tons of pics, posting all kinds of random stuff about her, being a good, crazy fangirl. But in the end there were too many reasons why she couldn't be my favourite. Let's start from the smallest reasons:
- She had some mannerisms on stage that I grew to dislike. It's very silly, but it's one of those feelings I just can't help.
- She was already 30 when I got into H!P. Yuuchan is over 10 years older than me and I think in the end that became too much for me (even if there was a period when I just didn't care, I don't really know what happened).
- She barely released music anymore. Because I was prepared to become a really up-to-date, active H!P fan, it felt boring my favourite was someone who was around so little.
- The biggest reason: Someone else stole my heart, and that was it.
But that's enough about my fandom, let's talk about Miss Yuuko Nakazawa! Yuuchan's singing voice is somewhat the opposite of her fiery personality. Her singing is so sweet, soft and beautiful and she's able to put a lot of emotion in it. But the majority of H!P fans seem to remember her as the loud, somewhat scary "mom" figure for the other members, someone who's made fun of because of her age, but who also makes fun of others lovingly (Charmy Ishikawa, Kei Yasuda, Sayumi Michishige)... What makes Yuuchan so entertaining in H!P is truly her relationship with the other members. Her character is tough and intimidating, but in reality she really cares about the other members and shows her emotions easily by crying, even. I think what she brings to H!P is a really down-to-earth character - she seems to appreciate every moment she gets to spend in this work because I think she realizes how lucky she is to be an idol, especially at her age.
To take this just a little bit deeper, a lot of foreign fans seem to think that when the girls are idols, they've lost their freedom. But to an adult member, if you don't want to get married, being an idol is having freedom. At that time you aren't financially dependant on your parents or your husband, you aren't working on a temporary job like most women in Japan, but you have some control over your own life. According to what I've read, Japanese women in general are expected to work only a few years after finishing studies, then get married and get kids - and that's what most women do. But if that's not the kind of life-style you want to have, you're not left with a whole lot of options. I think Yuuchan hasn't wanted a "normal life" and that's exactly why she's still in H!P. She knows she's lucky, she's happy about it and that can be seen in her whole essence.
Well, that's what I think...
I got a bit off-topic, but I guess what we can say is that Yuuko Nakazawa is a pretty amazing woman. Sexy, talented, fun to have around... Yeah.
It's somewhat weird, but I really never used to find Aya very likeable in Morning Musume... I do like her to some extent now, even if I'm still not paying lots of attention to her. I think it's cool that she has a blog, that she went to a H!P concert recently, and how she seemed pretty cool in a TV appearance at the end of last year. I also think it's pretty neat that she's written a book (or more?) and seems to be a good mom to her kids.
I don't know why I didn't really like her, there is no good reason. But at least I know I'm still not very fond of her voice, even if I never really disliked it enough to have it prevent me from enjoying old school Morning Musume songs. I wonder if it's her strong vibrato or simply the tone of her voice that doesn't impress me. I used to describe her singing by saying that she sounds drunk... Heh. She does have a strong voice, but I somehow just never liked it too much.
Also, even if I could always see that she was an attractive girl (and she still looks pretty good whenever she doesn't have a bad hairstyle), to me she always looked mean somehow... Could it have been the peirced nose? The shape of her eyebrows? They're just silly little things, but you know sometimes silly little things are enough. I just got this image that she wasn't as 'nice' as the other girls, only because of her appearance... These days she actually seems like the opposite of the image I had of her. A sweet person. I guess that's also why I like her now...
Anyway, since I really don't know a lot about Ayappe and never really paid a lot of attention to her, it's too bad I can't really write properly about her.
When I first got into Morning Musume and got my first PV (Koi no Dance Site), Sayaka really stood out to me and I was ready to make her my favourite. But then I googled her and discovered she had graduated ages ago. Grr. Selfishly I wished she had stayed longer because she's just someone I found very likeable.
Sayaka, you see, has a bubbly personality. But in all her cuteness and funkyness she also seemed somehow cool to me. I suppose she was a 'pro': able to have fun and be a bubbly idol when needed, but backstage also someone to rely on (in fact, she was Maki's tutor, if I remember correctly). I think she was also very pretty and cute, but in a unique way (that's why she'd stand out to me in Koi no Dance Site). There was also something fresh about her - I can't really explain it, but 'fresh' is really the word that comes to my mind when I think of Sayaka.
I'm afraid to say that Sayaka's voice never stood out to me a lot. It's a decent, pretty voice, but not really a voice that's easy to tell apart from others, at least to me. When I listen to old MM songs and try to figure out who is singing some line, it's not like "that is Sayaka's voice" but more like "that can't be anyone else because their voice isn't like that, so it must be Sayaka", if that makes any sense. Still, not exactly a huge flaw for her.
In the end, I suppose Sayaka to me is a legendary member I really wish I had got to know better. Sayaka's graduation concert remains one of my favourite H!P concerts and I'll never stop to think of Pucchimoni 1st generation as one of the coolest H!P units ever.
I haven't posted for a while... I thought that if I started some kind of never-ending project on this blog it would be easier to come back, since at least I'd always have something to write about if I couldn't think of anything better.
So I decided to do something I've done once before in December 2004, in Finnish: write down my opinions, feelings, everything about each and every Morning Musume member, including graduated ones. The last time I did this I wrote about members in random order, but I think this time I'll go by the order of graduation, then generation and age.
Maybe I'll also compare my old thoughts on the members to my current opinions. That's why I like writing down my opinions: because I know one day I'll read back on them and think "Whoa, things have changed a lot"... I think a lot should have changed, since I had only been a huge H!P fan for 8 or so months when I wrote the previous 'focuses'!
I guess it doesn't come as a surprise that there's not a whole lot I know about Asuka. However, thanks to my early favourites being Yuuchan and Nacchi, I naturally wanted to see and hear what Momusu's first generation was all about, searched for their appearances in particular and learned to know Asuka a bit, as well.
Asuka was 'weird'. She was only 12 when Momusu was formed, but neither her looks, personality nor voice was like a 12-year-old's. Her behaviour on TV shows was calm and mature, even if she was often the target of the hosts' jokes in both Asayan and Utaban. She had pretty facial features (at least in my opinion), but she wasn't really idol-like and she was chubbier than the rest of the girls. On Asayan she had auditioned for a rock vocalist, but in Morning Musume she ended up becoming a pop idol... It's no surprise she wasn't happy and chose to graduate.
What Asuka is best remembered for are most likely her vocals. She was very young when she was in MM, but she's still one of the best singers (if not the best one) that Morning Musume has ever had, and also had one of the most mature voices. She was a natural talent, a voice to count on also at live performances. It's somewhat sad to think Morning Musume will probably never again have as 'dependable' a voice like hers and Kei's were.
In any case, I find Asuka likeable and think she has been a unique and important member in Momusu history. She doesn't rank as one of my favourites, but I recognize her talent and respect her for being one of the original five members who founded Momusu.
Ah I was going to feature more members today, but my Sunday TV Marathon is starting, so I have to go. Heh.
